How do I journal and how should you journal?

HOW DO I JOURNAL?
So, what type of journaling do I do? And: How do I do? are virtually the same question.

If you were to ask me: "How do I journal and what type of journaling do I do?" I would answer: It depends on the day, on my mood, the weather, the time, and every other factor. I realize that really does not answer the question, but it doesn't make it any less true.

Question: How do I journal?

Simple Answer: I do what works for me at the time.

More Complex Answer: I try to journal every day--at least one sentence. But, in reality  I journal at least 30 minutes a day. More often than not, I journal a couple hours every day--right now. A month ago, the one sentence thing was pushing it. So, like I said... How I journal depends. I do a combination of handwritten and digital for the first copy of my journal. But, I make sure within one week to get my handwritten on the Internet and on the cloud--so it is permanent  I journal what I do each day. I journal my experiences, thoughts, feelings emotions, about conversations I have  about AHA! moments, I count my blessings. I vent. I dream. I write. I journal on my cell, on my Amazon Kindle Fire (1st generation), and desktop. I journal with My Memories Suite (a digital scrapbook), Google Docs within my Google Drive, with Penzu (my latest favorite), and within the three books I just wrote and will receive in the next two weeks. I try to journal as much as possible about my past, present, and future. I capture work photographs in my journal. I wrote my life story in my journal. I make lists. I make mindmaps. I journal for fun. I journal when I am upset. I journal to plan goals and check my goals and how they're coming along. I write and journal to gain a new fresh perspective. I journal so I center myself and focus on God and draw nearer to him again. I pray. I do journaling prompts. I journal to check my priorities and see if I am living them well. I do SOCs (Stream of Conscious Journaling) more often than anything else. I talk about people, the news, events, and my reactions to them.

In short, how do I journal? I do it all--and it all depends.

I do what works for me in that moment.

I think this is how I've been able to journal for 30 years--and it feels like a matter of days at times--and like decades other times. But, overall, journaling is the mot rewarding thing I ever do with my life.

HOW SHOULD YOU JOURNAL?
I cannot stress this enough: DAILY.

Some journalkeepers would not agree with me. They would say whenever works for you.
Journaling is not meant to be convenient (but, it can be). It's not supposed to be easy (few things in life are easy. If things were easy, everyone would be doing them.). Journaling every day is demanding. I won't argue.

However...

Note, I did not say how much you should journal every day.

I will now, though.

Journal at least one sentence every single day 365 days a year.

Yep. One sentence. That's it. To start.

But, make that one sentence count. Talk about the one event that stood out most from your day--positive or negative. What is it about that one event that was memorable? And, if I can't think of one thing... That brings up a whole new issue in my life. I should live every moment of my day--so that every moment is a memorable one. Otherwise, I am just skating by, living a mediocre existence--just surviving. I don't just want to live. I want to thrive. How about you?

So, journal every day. One sentence.

Do that for a week.

Then, the following week, add one sentence per day.

Then, add another sentence the following week.

Keep adding sentences like this until you are up to however long that feels right to you--that day. I recommend half an hour a day on average. But, again, that is up to you. But journal at least one sentence every day.

There is something I've learned through the years:

The more I journal, the higher quality of life I live.

It's in direct correlation. Literally. The more I journal, the better the life I live. Period. End of story.

Journaling Quote #4

Journaling Quote #3

Journaling Quote #2

Journaling is...

Journaling is writing the story of your life.

It is where you share your memories, lessons learned, and goals.

A Journal is where you remember the past, live intentionally in the moment, and plan for the future.

A journal is a story of your life and all of your: thoughts, prayers, emotions, choices, dreams, people, possessions, challenges, faith (and lack thereof at times), critters (pets), stress,   experiences, grief, photographs, births, art, books, realization, anniversaries, movies, new beginnings (starting over/trying again), TV shows, counted blessings, to do's, frustrations, music, work/employment/career, celebration, venting, death, marriage, separation, divorce, creative thought, song, poetry, happiness, friends, family, school, church, military life, exercise, food, recollections, homes, houses, vacations/travel, etc.

Journaling is where you learn and re-learn your priorities and live them.

So, again, I say that journaling is writing the story of your life--and everyone and everything your life includes.

If you have never journaled before, or do not do it every day, I recommend the 10-Year book.

If you journal quite a bit, and want to daily, try the 10-year and the 5-year.

If you journal every day, and want to get as much as possible out of it, I recommend the 1-year, plus the other two.

For any experience level, I will recommend the journaling prompts book.

These three books (plus the 4th) will be available in the next 6 weeks or so, to buy on Amazon--as a paperback book.

I am tired

There is something I've come to realize. I'm tired. Worn-out. Burned out. And need a break.

I also realize I have let my priorities slip.

What are my priorities?
~ God (prayer and Bible study)
~ Husband
~ Home
~ Personal Journalkeeping
~ Teaching/Writing about Journalkeeping & Memoir Writing
~ Writing Fiction/Novels

The truth of the matter is my personal and professional first love is journaling. Period. End of story.

Yesterday, I started to reassess. Today, I've done more of it.

I am going to take a break and get back to my professional first love. Hence, you'll see that in this blog for a while. I am not sure how much of a break I will need  I still am burning with the desire to write the sci-fi series based off my ancestors. But, for now, I need to journal--and devote great amounts of time to that. So, I am.

Starting with the post after this one, you are going to get a lot of information about journalkeeping (journaling).

Journaling: 2 New Series Coming Out

SILLINESS AND CRAZINESS ABOUND
I am probably crazy and out of my mind.

No. Who am I kidding? I am nuts--and glutton for punishment  I cannot deny this, as much as I would like to do so.

So, why am I crazy today? Or, maybe I should say more appropriately, Why am I more crazy today than normal?

(Hint) You might have guessed from the title of this blog post why I said all of this.

THE END OF YEAR
This morning, after writing 2,000 words of my novel, I started to think about journaling... And that started this whole mess. (I laugh at myself. After all, if you cannot laugh at yourself, then who can you? Never mind how boring life must be.)

I started to think of a new journal I wanted. No. That isn't accurate. I started to think of three new journals I wanted.

I looked online to see if there was anything on the market like what I wanted.

No.

Terrific. (That was sarcastic, in case you couldn't guess.)

That meant only one thing...

I had to write the books myself.

So, I am in the process of doing precisely that. I have the first book already completed and am getting ready to send it in to Amazon/CreateSpace so it can be produced as a paperback. Also, I am putting it on my Smashwords store as we speak.

My goal is to offer these books in every possible ebook format available and on Amazon and on Kindle.

I will keep you updated.

WHAT ARE THE THREE BOOKS?
~ 1-Year Remembering Your Present Journal
~ 5-Year Remembering Your Present Journal
~ 10-Year Remembering Your Present Journal

These are three very different books. If you are a nut about journaling, like I am, I recommend all three. If you have never journaled before, I recommend the 10-year one. If you are not a novice journal, but want something more, I recommend the 5-year journal.

Pumpkin Coffee Heaven (A low calorie, low/no sugar, low carb recipe)

Get a large can of pureed pumpkin. Divide in half. Half for freezer and half for refrigerator. Put in baggies.

Then, make a pot of coffee.

Add 3 T of pureed pumpkin to mug.

Pour half a mug of coffee. Stir.

Add, if you want, cinnamon, ginger, allspice, nutmeg powerder--a sprinkle of each.

Add 3 T half and half.

Add rest of mug of coffee.

Add sugar free sweetner pack.

If you want to make it extra dreamy, add sugar free pumpkin syrup (even ginger would work.)

And you get a mug of low calorie heaven! It's incredible.

Worship on One of Those Days

Today is one of those days I will hurt beagle's, cat's and turtle's ears--by listening to praise and worship music all day a little louder than normal. (It's not really that loud, fyi.)

The turtles love it when I sing at the top of my voice (or quietly), so today will be a day they enjoy.

Music soothes the savage beast inside when things haven't gone the way you wanted, so you are worried and disturbed. Anxious and grieving. Confused and grasping at straws.

Worship is always to be our response.

God is greater.

God's got this.

Now, more than ever, I feel the call to ceaseless prayer for the USA.

Hurricane Sandy News

I will use this blog as a place for me to write how my husband and I are fairing in the midst of Hurricane Sandy. So, check here for updates from time to time.

Of course, I will use the time and storm as a mood setter for my writing. I am a thriller historical fiction writer and all. So, if the power goes out, or we cut it off, then that's ambiance--right? It will help me to know more about the days of ol' I am writing about--right? (Do you hear how I am trying to to look at the bright side? Praying. Praying! Lol.)

We just realized we need more cat food, coffee, and Atkins bars... So, we are going to head out soon and brave the lines at a nearby store. (Lord, help it not be too busy.)

Just wanted to let you know this will be the storm center for our family and friends.

So far, there are no mandatory evacuations.

The Importance of Keeping Permanent Records (Hurricane Sandy Reminds Me)

When it comes to people, we should never keep permanent record of wrong doings. But, we should keep a permanent record of all the things we love about them and the good things they have done and the good that they are. But, that's not the purpose of this blog post right now.

As Hurricane Sandy is approaching, and we have no idea as to whether she will hit our home or not, we are preparing as though she will. I am quickly making lists in my head of what to bring--learning from Hurricane Irene what this means. But, another nice thing about Hurricane Irene, and mandatory evacuation, it taught me to prepare as much the day after so that I would be prepared for another hurricane. I have taken concrete steps to be prepared. Let me tell you the stress that has alleviated in my mind.

I have just downloaded all my 4700 photos from vacation from my cell to my computer and from there to the cloud. I'll get my husband to do the same. And, this reminded me of something and made me aware of something.

While thinking of going through another hurricane is stressful... I am grateful for having been through the first one (Irene). This third generation Colorado native never had to even think of hurricanes living near the Rockies. But, having said all of that, I feel a peace. Why? My affairs are in order. My priorities are straight. I know to prepare for the worst--and pray the best happens. But, most importantly, I have kept permanent records.

Let's be realistic. I can lose all of my possessions. I can always buy and accumulate more. But, the memories are what are priceless and need to be guarded with fierce veracity. This includes photos, journals, writings, calendars, scrapbooks, etc. Hence, to have permanent records of these things are critical.

WHAT DO I MEAN BY PERMANENT RECORD?
I mean having everything saved on the cloud over the internet -where you could lose your computers, cell, tablets, house, etc., but you can access these records from anywhere in the world at any time, provided you have access to an internet capable device and the internet.

What should you keep on permanent record? The answer is simple: EVERYTHING.

Examples: Journals, digital scrapbooks, photos, writings, letters, digital scans of important paperwork, etc.

A LESSON FOR US
You never know when a hurricane or tornado might come your way. Or what about a fire or a natural gas explosion? Or, what about being burglarized?

I know we hate to think like this. I know we would rather live in a world of denial. But, as our house is in flames, or flooded, denial will not change the fact that it is happening or has happened. It's critical to be prepared for the worst today.

So... Think about this. Are you prepared? Do you have everything saved to a computer that you can have saved?

NaNoWriMo, Preparation, and Life Goals

NaNoWriMo is in 6 Days
I cannot believe that National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo or NaNo for short) kicks off in six days. It seems like just yesterday I was counting down for NaNo 2011. My...how time flies.

Preparation Before Today
I am ready for NaNoWriMo. I realize I can always be more prepared. Therefore, I am not stressed about NaNo and writing 50,000 words in 30 days. Then again  it might have something to do with the fact that I write 3,000 words per day at the moment. I've spend the last couple of months preparing myself to do this. That way, when NaNo is here, and I only have to write 1,667 words per day, it will seem easy. (But, my goal is still 3,000 words per day--Monday through Friday--minus two days for Thanksgiving--and hopefully none for Hurricane Sandy.)

What NaNoWriMo Teaches About Life Goals (or Dream)
NaNoWriMo teaches a great deal about achieving life goals. Hence, the effects of NaNo in my life are far-reaching.

NaNoWriMo--writing a novel in a month is a goal. Right?

Writing a novel, as a goal, is no easy task--let alone in 30 days! Hence, it is not something that just anyone can do. It takes a passion, steadfastness or determination, courage, faith, and a lot of hard, intentional work.

For every goal, we need a plan. We need to set up things to do or steps to accomplish along the way as we meet our goal. These steps need to be measurable  where we know it is a step we have done and is leading toward the fulfillment of stated goal.  And, we need to put those steps on our calendars. Every day, week, month, and quarter, we need to look and see how our fulfillment of the steps have come along, and if we might need to add more steps or delete some steps along the way. I also recommend journaling through each step along the journey of goal fulfillment. Then, one day, we will achieve victory--where we have achieved our goal--where our dream is realized.

NaNo has shown me how I CAN make my dreams and goals come true. Period. The only way it does not happen is determined by me. I can tell myself how tough it is, and how I cannot do it, but to what good does this serve? How does this attitude help? How will this make my dream or goal come true?

Rather, I tell myself over and over and over-- I CAN do this!

I make sure to set up enough action steps that I will be able to make this goal and dream come true. It's when I make the action steps too large that it makes it difficult for me to make my goal come true. Let me explain. If I set my goal to write 210,000 words in 30 days, that would be difficult at best. If I were to say I needed to write 10,000 words per day, it would also be difficult. However, I have had many days when I have done precisely that. I realize I need to LIVE as I accomplish my dream and goal. I do not want to only do my goal steps. I still need to eat, clean, shower, spend time with my husband, etc. So, I make sure to set smaller action steps I can accomplish. For instance, if I never have written before, or never done NaNo before, I would keep the 1,667 word count goal and do no more.

Also, when achieving goals, and taking action steps, I understand some steps will take longer than I anticipated. There will be off days. Some days, I might only be able to write 500 words. But, the next day, I might be able to write 3000 rather than a 1667 day. I cut myself grace and not stress.

When going after a goal and dream:
~ It is critical I work hard.
~ It is important for me to stay focused and keep my mind focused on the task at hand.
~ I must have courage.
~ I need to keep balance and not neglect everything else that is a priority in my life (God, Bible study, Husband, House, Critters, Family, Friends, Eating Right, Sleep, Exercise Etc.)
~ I must keep trying.
~ I need to cut myself grace when things do not go as well as I hoped.
~ I must never, ever give up.

ANYONE CAN DO NANOWRIMO
It just takes a commitment and lots of trying. It really is that simple.

Hurricane?!?

It's rather nice to live in your own little world of bliss and oblivion... However, something always has to interrupt that, doesn't it? Well...

Today, I've been in my own little world of happy-go-lucky writing. I've been quite productive and am thrilled with my progress. HOWEVER... I just got an email that let me know how Tropical Storm/Hurricane Sandy has the potential of hitting here. (Yikes! Yelp!!!) WHAT?!?

This Colorado native had no idea there was the possibility since I started noticing Sandy yesterday.

Last year, we (my husband, beagle, orange Maine Coon, and two RES turtles) went through Hurricane Irene... A month after we moved here to Virginia... A week after the earthquake that also hit D.C. and damaged the Washington Monument and National Cathedral... A month before that, I saw my first funnel cloud--practically in my backyard in Nebraska.

Therefore, this news about Sandy kinda swept me off my feet. I quickly went through the house, like a storm in my own right, and am mostly hurricane ready. No joke. It took about 15 minutes was all. We learned from Irene how to be ready for the worst. In Irene, we had mandatory evacuation and everything. Thankfully, our garages were flooded, but no more.

Over the last year, I have done everything I can to ensure I can up and leave in a moment's notice--if ever needed. My writing is all electronic now and is over the internet  This includes most of my books, so I do not have to worry about bringing the most important books with me. This means less crap I have to bring in my vehicle. That's good news.

If she heads this way, we will most likely have to evacuate. We live in a place that is only 6 feet above sea level and the Chesapeake is only about a mile as the crow flies from our house. So, do the math... This means it's likely we would have to evacuate. Sigh.

But, I am ready.

There was another valuable lesson we learned last year with Irene: Treat the time evacuating as a vacation. We would need it if our house had damage and if we lost anything. So, that's what we will do this time--if the worst happens.

Now, I am going to try to get back to writing and see how much I can get done.

Life is sure interesting sometimes.

By the way. I changed my book title and how I am writing the book. It will be more exciting and more of a thriller. It's now called:
